What I am thinking is something along the lines of:

Apache received http://w.example.com/
  Redirected https://w.example.com/
    DocumentRoot /usr/local/www/example/web/
  Loading DocumentIndex index.php
    fcgi redirect /usr/local/www/example/otherweb/index.php
