Dinkumware C++ library fixes

Hi,
Just downloaded Xalan 1.1, rebuilt it with VC6 for Win32. No errors.
It's not clear to me if I have to use "Dinkumware C++ library fixes"
And if I have to, what exactly should I do and what to replace?
And what is impact if I don't apply them? Crashes? Memory leaks?
