Most Popular Search / ExternalFileField
Hi Team..
I am indexing thousands of documents using a custom logic to read through
document metadata and get it indexed in SOLR. This leads me to let business
search documents across website.
Now I have a requirement of showing most popular documents (Documents which
were opened most of the times.)
I wonder if SOLR can maintain these statistics? /*(My assumption here is
SOLR is just a search engine not a analytics engine.. to track user
operations..)*/
On Another note: I came across a solution of using *ExyernalFileFIeld class
* To get document open statistics from an external file...
And I need to implement an independent logic to update this external file
with document opening count.
Is ExternalFileField the only approach for Most most popular search?
Please advice.

Hi,
Indeed, Solr doesn't keep track of this. You could capture this
information yourself though. What you do with it after you capture is up
to you, but it sounds like you want it for boosting purposes, so yes, EFF
is the way to go.
For what it's worth, we run a free Search Analytics service that includes a
bunch of reports including Most Clicked and Most Seen documents. The
former is what you are looking for here, while the latter represents
documents that shows up in search results. Personally, I'd also love to
have a Never Seen documents reports. :)

Atuldj,
You are right. There is no such out-of-the-box feature in Solr. The most
closet thing which I'm aware of is
Lucidworks.lucidimagination.com/display/lweug/Click+Scoring+Relevance+Framework
But I've never use it.
ExternalFileField is an appropriate building block.
I'm trying to contribute some essential part of functionality which I told
about in SOLR-4085. Be aware of it might be useful.

Hi,
Please take a look at Mikhail's solution for something similar -
