[drlvm] EUT jdtdebug suit passes with JVMTI_ERROR_unknown error
---------------------------------------------------------------
Key: HARMONY-3047
URL: https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/HARMONY-3047
Project: Harmony
Issue Type: Bug
Components: DRLVM
Environment: reproduced on Windows
Reporter: Aleksey Ignatenko
When runningn jdtdebug suilt from EUT Eclipse writes to console window the following error (I consider it equal to crash):
FATAL ERROR occurred in native method: JDWP on raw monitor wait, jvmtiError=JVMTI_ERROR_unknown(70007)
The stack trace of the 02B73788 java thread:
JDWP exit error JVMTI_ERROR_unknown(70007): on raw monitor wait
I succeded to see the crash in debugger, stack trace:

Ivan Popov commented on HARMONY-3047:
-------------------------------------
I've managed to reproduce deadlock in JDWP agent. It seems the problem is in unhandled C++ exception thrown in EventDispatcher thread. Unfortunately, I cannot identify where exception is thrown, but I suspect it is thrown because of JVMTI error in releasing raw monitor. That's why other threads remain locked at this monitor. I'll try to identify the underlaying problem and fix JDWP agent to catch C++ exception.

Aleksey Ignatenko commented on HARMONY-3047:
--------------------------------------------
One additional note to reproduce:
The crash is handled by some exception handler I did not find (drlvm default returs continue search). To catch the crash one need to set VS debugger to stop in all kind of exceptions (in Debug/Exception menu) and to attach to the process "Debug - Eclipse sdk". In the debugger I see "User breakpoint" exception first (I suppose this is something about breakpoint in Java program) and afetr I get "Access violation" (the issue).

--------------------------------------------
I have the following stack:
>harmonyvm.dll!_assert(const char * expr=0x0076addc, const char * filename=0x0076aba8, unsigned int lineno=0x000006a4) Line 295 C

Stub vm_new_vector_or_null_using_vtable_and_thread_pointer already accepts wrong value of array size. Need to understand what function sends this number. I could not trace the function with JIT logging as scenario this is complex and rather long scenario (JIT crashes with logging of method entry/exit). I will continue investigating the issue.

Aleksey Ignatenko commented on HARMONY-3047:
--------------------------------------------
To reproduce one needs to:
1. build the latest Harmony jre (I have r499267.)
2. dowload EUT runniing script from jira-2038
3. update eut.properties: set test.jre.home= to Harmony jre home
4. type "ant -Dtests=jdtdebug" in command line

Gregory Shimansky resolved HARMONY-3047.
----------------------------------------
Resolution: Fixed
I've applied the patch which catches C++ exceptions in JDWP threads at 530059. Finally we can close this bug.

[jira] Updated: (HARMONY-3047) [drlvm] EUT jdtdebug suit passes

Aleksey Ignatenko updated HARMONY-3047:
---------------------------------------
Attachment: readPacket.txt
readPacket.txt is implementation of readPacket, assuming that the issue is reproduced both on pure JET and pure OPT and readPacket implementation I would presume that the problem is not in JIT.

Aleksey Ignatenko commented on HARMONY-3047:
--------------------------------------------
Ivan, thanks a lot for your reply. I built working_jdktools and copied jdwp.dll from it to HY_VM\...deploy\jdk\jre\bin, jdtdebug started behaviour changed, now some tests fail with the following error:
[exec] [java] This application has requested the Runtime to terminate it in an unusual way.
[exec] [java] ERR!!!ERR!!!ERR!!!ERR!!!ERR!!!ERR!!!ERR!!!ERR!!!ERR!!!ERR!!!ERR!!!ERR!!!ERR!!!ERR!!!Assertion failed: (size & NEXT_T
O_HIGH_BIT_SET_MASK) == 0, file c:\.usr\avignate\harmony\working_vm\vm\vmcore\include\Class.h, line 1700
BTW sometimes tests with this message pass, sometimes - not (debug window appears or VM shutdows or hangs), I'm going to continue investigating the issue.

Ivan Popov commented on HARMONY-3047:
-------------------------------------
JDWP agent code is still sensitive to JVMTI errors. If agent cannot release raw monitor due to JVMTI error, this may cause deadlock in agent threads and lead to VM hang up. I've submitted HARMONY-3269 enhancement to change JDWP agent cleanup procedure in order to minimize such risk.

1. tmn_suspend_enable() does not help here as the stub did not put m2n frame on stack when crash happent.
2. I've tried once to do that but it failed somehow (I don't remember now what was the reason), probably I'll try to repeat this weekend. I was trying to launch tests one by one via Eclipse, the fail is reproduced on different tests, sometimes the whole suit passed.

Ivan Popov commented on HARMONY-3047:
-------------------------------------
The root problem is that your Harmony JRE (probably DRLVM build) does not contain JDWP agent, which is included only in full Harmony JDK snapshots created with federated build. As a result, JDWP agent from a JDK used for starting ant is used. This JDWP agent is not compatible with JVMTI implementation in DRLVM, this causes fatal JVMTI error in DRLVM .
Wrong JDWP agent from reference JDK is loaded into DRLVM, because ant adds JDK's JRE directory (where jdwp.dll is located) to PATH environment before running runtests script. If you run runstests.bat from command line without ant, you'll see more clear error in Eclipse console:
Failed to open agent library jdwp.dll : The specified module could not be found.
Failed to open agent library jdwp.dll
Failed to initialize JVMTI.
FAILED to invoke JVM.

Ivan Popov updated HARMONY-3047:
--------------------------------
Attachment: jdwp_agent_threads.patch
Attached patch adds try-catch block to JDWP agent threads execution. If any exception caused by JVMTI error is thrown, it results in closing debugger session, but not to VM crash.
I've run EUT jdtdebug tests with updated JDWP agent library and see no more crashes.

Gregory Shimansky commented on HARMONY-3047:
--------------------------------------------
JVMTI error is reported because when VM which is being debugged is crashing, and so connection between Eclipse and JVMTI agent breaks. Eclipse has no way to find out what has happened on the other side of connection, that's why it reports such error.

Assertion as Class.h:1699 indicates that the size of array requested is over allowed maximum of 2^31-1. What is the array class that causes this?

-------------------------------------
Gregory, you can safely commit jdwp_agent_threads.patch, but I'm not sure if it resolved the root problem of the crash that I cannot reproduce anymore. I think you can mark this issue as resolved. If the problem is reproduced this issue can be reopened or new issue submitted.
