[jira] [Commented] (BIGTOP-1934) Bigtop linkage and support for Linux on the Power platform

    [ https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/BIGTOP-1934?page=com.atlassian.jira.plugin.system.issuetabpanels:comment-tabpanel&focusedCommentId=14695906#comment-14695906 ]

David Clissold commented on BIGTOP-1934:
----------------------------------------

Catching up on the status here; activity since the last post:

Dana set me up a Power VM running Ubuntu, at SiteOX.
I installed a few other packages (and their dependencies) which appeared to be necessary, including gradle, puppet, docker, vagrant, and maven.

Following Olaf's early suggestion, in the bigtop directory, I ran "gradlew toolchain" and I eventually get a "BUILD SUCCESSFUL" result (and rc=0).

I'm not quite sure of the next step. (Disclaimer: although I'm trying to set this up, I confess to starting this task without prior bigtop experience).

One thing I did next was to install jenkins, though it's not wanting to start for some reason; am trying to figure out why not.

> IBM and SiteOx are working together to establish system availability to allow general use of Bigtop on Power Linux systems, allowing developers the ability to access the environment on Power hardware.
> The benefit is that this expands Bigtop to other platforms, and it helps us by making it easy for developers to check whether their code works across platforms.
> (This topic was brought up 2 days ago, 13-July, on the general bigtop user mailing list; this gira is being opened to track questions and activity/requirements in order to establish this).
> In a nutshell: Hardware is already available at SiteOx and is ready to install and make publicly available. We'd like to understand exactly what procedures to follow in setting these VMs up, at which time we'd subsequently be happy to see Bigtop's main website point to the installation for people to use.
