repository crashes
Hi,
today our main SVN repository crashed - out of the blue. Yesterday it was
another one that crashed (after working for about 1 year without any problems).
I just got a 550 Internal Server Error.
In both cases no user was working on the server when the crash happened. The
last commit performed without any errors.
The SVN server was up and running, and there haven't been any access issues on
the other repositories.
I re-created the repositories with the hotbackups we perform every night, but
we are worried about these crashes.
Any idea what could be the reason for this behaviour?
Thx
Undine.
BTW:
After re-creating the repository I wasn't sure about the group permission.
Which permission would you suggest for the GROUP (all subversion users)?
r-s?, rw-?
(Owner is user "svn" - the system user - with rwx, of course..)

Pretty silly to not even try it. Although, its starting to sound like
permissions are probably the main issue here.

You are apparently doing server administration. Therefore, you are an
administrator. A novice adminstrator, perhaps, but everyone is a novice to
begin with.
Branko has already pointed out that the information is there. All you have
to do is read it.

Oh, really.
http://svnbook.red-bean.com/en/1.0/svn-book.html#svn-ch-5-sect-3.4
http://svnbook.red-bean.com/en/1.0/svn-book.html#svn-ch-6-sidebar-1
And that's just two minutes of searching the 1.0 version of the book.

So you think, a "svnadmin recover <REPOS_PATH>" would have solved the
problem...?

I wish I had the time to do that - unfortunately there is no chapter about
permissions in the book...*sigh*
As I said, my main job (means: my only job) is being a developer, and I have
to work up to 15 hours a day just to meet the deadlines.
But someone has to do the server administration...
I thought this was a simple question (with a simple answer..).
OK, I'm gonna leave it as it is (rwxrw----), at least it works...
Sorry for bothering you with a "silly" question, this was why I mentioned that
I'm no administrator.
Regards,
Undine.

Based on the evidence you have shown so far, yes.
There have were some permission errors, and some "You need to run DB
recovery" errors, but nothing that would indicate corruption.

I suggest you carefully read what the Subversion Book has to say about
repository administration, with particular focus on permissions. That should
clear up your uncertainty.

Do you really think it's a nut..? (see Apache logfile below).

Well, yes, me and, if I'm not here and something happens with the server,
someone of the svn group.
Although I'm the one who's maintaining the server, I'm basically a developer,
too and not too experienced with that stuff :-/
