1 java thread and 5 httpd threads?

I recently re-installed cocoon on two new servers that
I have, everything seems to be working fine, except
that they are extremely slow when multiple users
access an xsp file at the same time.

I did a "ps -x", and there is only 1 "java" thread,
and 5 "httpd" threads....on my old server, there would
be the same number of "java" and "httpd" threads.

Could this be causing the slowness?
Where do I set the number of java threads to equal the
same as httpd?

Thanks

ps doesn't really show threads... it displays processes. A single
process can be made up of 1 or more threads. Depending upon your
os ps may display each thread as a process or not as this depends
how threading is implemented in the kernel. AFAIK linux make use
of the mini-process idea in that each thread is handled as a very
special process and should appear in ps as such. If you are using
a different os, e.g. dec alpha it is not uncommon to see only 1
java process even though you are making use of more than 1 thread.

If you are using linux I would be a little worried (and perhaps
someone else will know how to fix this), if not don't sweat it.
