That's a decent point, and it makes me wonder if there is one decision maker for renaming or if there will be a community vote to decide a winner. I randomly submitted a name above, but it would be better if there was a form to submit a name so we don't have to eventually read through 200 comments to find the different names, and the comments are strictly comments and not the options themselves. There must be one person that decides on the name or if the name will be vote driven, it would be great if that person could comment on the process for choosing the final name.

Drawbridge - a bridge (GET IT?) that opens (LIKE PHONEGAP IS DOING AS PART OF APACHE, GET IT?) to allow for the transport of goods, people and ideas into the economy at large, but closes to provide reliable, safe transport for individuals (AND THEIR APPS ON MULTIPLE PLATFORMS, GET IT?!?)

Perhaps coming at this from a different direction would be good.
This project will likely see a lot more than just phone and tablet "devices" in the near future. There is already the phonegap-mac, and I would assume windows and linux would be next. All of these platforms are introducing various forms of HTML based native application support that would be great for the Callback model.
Perhaps thinking of things in these terms will help sper some ideas. For me, callback is an ambassador along the lines of envoy, or diplomat. Perhaps playing on these will lead to something. For example "appbassador".
Barring all of that I say we go with project "puppy" :-)

I happen to like the "meaning" of the PhoneGap name; "Phone" for phones, though it should probably be "Device"; and "Gap" in that the libraries "bridge the gap" from today's to tomorrow's browser APIs.
"bridge" might be a better term to use, since it seems more positive than "gap".
"DeviceBridge"?
I'm a terrible namer. However, when I'm naming, I often look up terms in a thesaurus to see if there are "interesting" alternatives to things, which by itself seems a little helpful. Here goes:

When I attempt to explain PhoneGap to others I tend to focus on its ability to facilitate cross-platform mobile apps from one code-base. So, how about Keystone?
Keystone: 'something that is necessary to connect or support a number of other related things'
On the matter of the name Callback - I completely agree with Patrick that this is a poor choice of name as it's a common term already within the community this product is aimed at.

I recommend "TouchGap" or an alternative based on the word "touch" since the majority of devices supported by the project do indeed have touch based interfaces (and won't they all in the future?) but not all devices are actually phones.
Having the word "Phone" in the name has never been optimal for the long term, IMHO.

Full disclosure: I suggested the name Callback, and I would like a blue bikeshed.
Google-juice is a non-issue - things are difficult to search for until they're not. See Node, Prototype, ".net", etc etc. In the short-mid term, the vast majority of resources (books, documentation, blog posts, Stack Overflow discussion) will be under the name PhoneGap, until the new name gets enough traction.
A more legitimate concern, to my mind, is that "Callback" could be a confusing name in prose documentation, as in
"once the Callback deviceready event has fired call the Callback Camera API, passing it a success callback and an error callback."
You can get away with an acronym when for written prose - "call the CB.Camera API..." - but that doesn't work for spoken prose.
To avoid this confusion, I propose the new name "CallBackTheLibrary" :)

Just shorten the existing name, take out a few letters in the middle. Something like Ph(oneg)ap => Phap
Or, one more letter removed => Php

As noted in the [Callback proposal|http://wiki.apache.org/incubator/CallbackProposal], PhoneGap remains a commercial trademark of Nitobi/Adobe, which is why it can't be used by the Apache project. The project name can also not be "[confusingly similar|http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Confusing_similarity]" to an existing trademark in the same sector, which is why a name like DeviceGap that was floated around earlier was not OK.
I find Callback to be a pretty good name, but that's just me.
