Trouble setting up Axis

I'm working a tutorial from IBM. I've got Geronimo running. I've have placed the axis2.war file in the deploy directory. The next instructions are to point my browser to

http://localhost:8080/axis2/index.jsp

I've set up Geronimo to listen on port 8090, so I changed that part. According to my instructions I should be seeing a particular web page, but instead I get a 404 error telling me:

The requested resource (/axis2/index.jsp) is not available.

Has anyone got some advice on how to proceed?

Thanks.

Re: Trouble setting up Axis

Posted by Matthias Howell <ma...@gmail.com>.
There seems to be some confusion as to how to use axis2 with geronimo.
Unfortunately I don't know what the correct (or perhaps better) way to do it
is.

I have managed to get an axis2 webservice running under Geronimo but it
involved deploying an axis2 war.

I added this as a geronimo-web.xml in the WEB-INF directory
<web-app xmlns="http://geronimo.apache.org/xml/ns/j2ee/web-1.1">

  <dep:environment xmlns:dep="
http://geronimo.apache.org/xml/ns/deployment-1.1">
    <dep:moduleId>
      <dep:groupId>mygroup</dep:groupId>
      <dep:artifactId>axis2</dep:artifactId>
      <dep:version>1.0</dep:version>
      <dep:type>war</dep:type>
    </dep:moduleId>

    <dep:hidden-classes>
      <dep:filter>org.apache.commons</dep:filter>
        <dep:filter>org.jdom</dep:filter>
        <dep:filter>org.apache.axis2</dep:filter>
        <dep:filter>org.apache.axiom</dep:filter>
    </dep:hidden-classes>
  </dep:environment>

  <context-root>/axis2</context-root>
</web-app>

I used the geronimo console to deploy the war, then went to
localhost:8080/axis2 where I could deploy my aar file(s).

I'm using geronimo 2.1.3 with tomcat and axis2 1.4.1

I'm hoping to learn of a better/more standard way of using axis2 in geronimo
(by watching this thread).

I've fond the console. Here is the list of installed web applications:

org.apache.geronimo.configs/ca-helper-tomcat/2.1.4/car
 org.apache.geronimo.configs/dojo-legacy-tomcat/2.1.4/car

Nothing there suggests axis to my inexperienced eye. What should be seeing?

Thanks.

Once you deploy the axis2.war use the web console to see the context
root for the axis2.war file. Click on "Web App WARs" and look for the
axis2 application there and click on the context root shown.

Hi, just some thoughts here.

For 404 error, you might need to look into your deployment plan and verify
the <context-root>value. Based on the information here, the <context-root>
should be axis2?

By the way it would be more helpful if you can provide linkage(package) of
your tutorial.

Hi Charles

As a Geronimo user I found this quite simple web service example (in
Geronimos wiki) to be a good stepping stone to learn about how to build
web services in Geronimo.

http://cwiki.apache.org/GMOxDOC21/jaxws-calculator-simple-web-service-with-jax-ws.html

If you are using G 2.1.x I suggest you also download and try out the
sample source code. You will find instructions here

http://cwiki.apache.org/GMOxDOC21/sample-applications.html

This and the link Kevan pointed you to (
http://cwiki.apache.org/GMOxDOC21/web-services.html )  would probably
get you started and as others already pointed out Axis2 is already In
Geronimo Tomcat.

Looking for more general information about Geronomo (If you haven't
found It yet) take a look at "Geronimo user guide" and "Developer's
Guide" here http://cwiki.apache.org/GMOxDOC21/

Good. IMO, many of those tutorials should provide text editor-based
and geronimo command-based (e.g. ./bin/deploy.sh deploy) instructions,
also...

Good. I've got the tutorial in a window now. Eclipse is not a problem,
although my preferred style is to work with a text editor. It gives me a
better feel for what the code is doing when I type it out myself. I have
installed the Tomcat+Axis2 version of Geronimo.

Thanks again.

Thanks. Heh, that tutorials 3 years old. If you want to use it, I
suppose you could download Geronimo 1.1.1 and give it a try. You'd
also want to use a down-level version of Axis2 (I'd guess the tutoral
was written for Axis2 1.0). There may be more up-to-date tutorials on
DeveloperWorks, but have no idea where you'd find them.

As an alternative, I'd strongly recommend you take a look at http://cwiki.apache.org/GMOxDOC21/web-services.html
  Note that the tutorial assumes that you're using Eclipse -- this may
or may not be desirable for you...

Try out the tutorial on our Wiki, mentioned above.

Geronimo Java EE servers have two distributions: Tomcat+Axis2 and Jetty
+CXF. So, depending on which distribution you've downloaded, by
default you'll be using either Axis2 or CXF for your Web Services
implementation. Either is EE 5 compliant...

Just tried to access the linkage but failed with authentication. Geronimo
has lots of tutorials about web services to play with.

You may take a look at

Thanks for your interest. The tutorial is entitled "Understanding Web
Services specifications, Part 1: SOAP"

and can be found at
https://www6.software.ibm.com/developerworks/education/ws-understand-web-services1/index.html

I do have files installed in %geronimo_home%\repository\org\apache\axis2.
There are seven directories entitled:

axis2-adb
axis2-java2wdsl
axis2-jaxws
axis2-jaxws-api
axis2-kernel
axis2-metadata
axis2-saaj

Since I am new to this, if the tutorial is very out of date, it will be a
challenge to "translate" to the new context. So, what URL can I use to
verify that Axis is running? That will have to be where I start.

I appreciate any guidance I can get.

That's axis 1.4, not any axis2 jar, which would be under repository/
org/apache/axis2/..... Could you please tell us what tutorial you are
looking at? If it suggests adding the axis2 jar to geronimo it is
extremely out of date. We might be able to do something so that its
status is clearer to the next person to find it.

I don't really want to integrate my own. I was simply following the IBM
tutorial's instructions. I have located the axis jar in the
%geronimo_home%\repository\axis\axis\1.4. How can I tell if it's operating?

What tutorial are you looking at? I'd guess that somebody would have a
look at it...

Geronimo has web services (Axis2 or CXF) support already integrated.
So, not sure why you'd want to integrate your own...
