[users@httpd] strange apache performance results for same hardware

I did several ab speed tests on various servers and found very different
results, which i am not able to explain:

ab -n 500 -c 100 127.0.0.1/test.html
test.html is a rather small html file (600 Bytes)

The Requests per second vary between 200 and 1800 !!!
On one PIII 1 GHZ i get 1700 R/s and on another PIII 1GHZ I only get 750
R/s. With a nearly twice as fast machine (celeron 2GHZ) I only get
between 200 and 500 R/s?

The Apache 1.3 httpd.conf files on all servers are nearly the same (same
modules and setting, slight differences in conf layout).
ReverseDNSLookup is always off.

I suspect some os or apache compile settings, but have not found
anything yet.

I am *very* interested how this is possible and what settings might be
responsible. (Performance difference > 300%)
The apache performance guide revealed nothing, ditto google, et al.

Thanks
Manfred

PS: The complete apache bench (AB) Request per Second results:

P2-400Mhz, 320MB, Redhat 7.3 ................. 528.54
P3-1Ghz, 1GB, FreeBSD 4.10 ................... 1718.21
P3-1Ghz, 400MB, SuSE 9.1 ..................... 758.73 (Apache2)
Celeron-2Ghz, 256MB, Suse 9.0 ................ 511.40
P4-2.4Ghz, 768MB, FreeBSD 5.2.1 .............. 1858.74
P4-3Ghz, 150MB, VM Session, FreeBSD 5.2.1 .... 592.42
P4-3Ghz, 150MB, VM Session, Redhat 8.0 ....... 1779.36

JMeter indicates simular differences.
