+1, our current setup works quite well. I for one would not like to
searching through BZ to find a discussion.

No, it shouldn't. Discussions about something else than a single
specific defect belong on the mailing list, not in some bugzilla issue.

Regarding your request (see subject):
I don't see, that developers still have one assigned field of activity.
That was something enforced in Sun/Oracle times. We are not that
hierarchical anymore. Nowadays everybody is allowed to work on everything.

Regarding the idea to connect bugzilla to a mailing list. We already
have that. That list is issues@openoffice.apache.org. I even have
created a filter that directs all mails from that list that contain the
string 'New:' to their own folder.

Therefore I am tempted to close issue 122803 as RESOLVED/NOTABUG.

Hi Rainer,

I'm not sure what you are suggesting. many of the core developers
already follow the issues@openoffice.apache.org mailing list. All new
Bugzilla issues and changes to issues are echoed to that mailing list.
But we also generally start a new thread on the dev list to discuss
any issue that needs special attention. The dev list is the best way
to get the project's attention.

One thing we could do better is to then take the conversation back to
Bugzilla and continue it there. But the dev list is still useful for
that initial, "Hello, we need to discuss issue 12345".

Note some teams at Apache do a lot more in their issue tracker than we
do. For example, the Legal Affairs team does a good portion of their
discussions within JIRA. That is because their discussions are much
more focused on specific issues or questions, e.g, "Is this license
permissible?" In our case have have stuff that will work well in an
issue tracker, but we also have free-flowing discussions of
brainstorming, how-to questions, coordination, etc.
