Attached are the patch to the .vsl file and the new file site.css. These ensure that all presentation information (fonts, colors, etc) is stored in the stylesheet and not inside the doc model file (site.vsl). The CSS file has been tested to handle short website pages and big DRL docs and has styles for both.
To integrate the improvement, please apply the patch and place the site.css file into the site/docs/ directory.
Note: to make the improvement work, you need to propagate the changes to the server. The hyperlink to the styles file is absolute (http://incubator.apache.org/harmony/docs/site.css).

i think we have to tweak the patches a bit more to make the site look nice.
- There's a tiny mistake in the patch "Removing presentation info..."; the link to the site.css file is relative and only works for docs in docs/subcomponents/*/ folders. however, for pages in the docs/ folder the link is broken and no styles are applied. just check out how the Documentation page looks now, for example. I suggest that we change this to an absolute link, like "http://incubator.apache.org/harmony/docs/site.css" or something. this way, the link will work ok for the web pages in all directories...
- Not all pages seem to be updated. don't know why this happens, but some pages appear to use old styles and formatting, for example, the Class Library page. Maybe, you need to regenerate those pages with the new site.vsl to make them work correctly?

I have checked the new version of the website. this looks fine! I suggest that we close the issue, provided we agree on the following:
- changes to individual pages should be made to ensure unique L&F for the site; for example, margins for similar text on different pages can be different just because different tags are used for markup.
Changes for markup unification can be tracked in JIRA 1443, https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/HARMONY-1443
- another enhancement to the site: remove the border reproduced by using images. reasoning: see the License page! the image-based dark-grey border is only used for preformatted text, whereas this element already has a border defined in css - light-grey solid border and background coloring.
I could vote for implementing both suggestions. Let me know what you think.

Nadya, I'm going to apply the changes shortly because they are an improvement in general. However, I think we should try to do something to reduce the left margin a little further - see the attached images to see how much they've increased for me (using firefox on linux).
I did apply the smaller-margins patch but the left margin is still probably too large.
The only other comment is that perhaps now the
"Welcome to Apache Harmony - Open Source Java SE" heading is a more appropriate size we might not need to repeat it. What do others think?

Nadya, Thanks for looking at this. I notice that the Removing-presentation-info-from-vsl.txt patch removes the settings for a number of variables - bodylink for example - but that after applying it some of these variables are still used. This doesn't seem right. Am I missing something?

About the left margin: i agree that this can be reduced. do you want me to do it? or you'd rather do it yourself to get exactly the result you want?
one thing should be noted: now the left-margin setting works in a slightly different way:
old version: almost no margin for H1 with big margin for the following text
new version: bigger margin for H1 and the whole page, with smaller difference between H1 and text that follows :)

Thanks for paying attention. The goal was to remove variables, such as
bodylink because we don't actually need them. Corresponding styles in
site.css for a elements cover these. If there are occurrences of
bodylink, I think we should remove them, I was just inattentive and
missed these ;(

Attaching a fix for the issue that Mark found. i discovered one instance of $bodylink variable used to set color of Copyright notice. Fixed by assigning a class to it.
Also attach a minor improvement for the site.css file that makes Arial-based styles (for note and example headings, for figure captions etc) smaller and reduces left margins for these styles.

I spotted this problem and changed the stylesheet like to "/harmony/site.css" - (i've also tweaked my test environment so I see this problem next time.)
I've also fixed the "back to top" links to use '<a href="#top">' not '<a href="top">'.
These changes will take a little while to appear on the live site. But can you check them when they appear. Thanks.

Adding patch that fixes the excess left-margin setting that Mark has reported.
problem was caused by the setting assigned to the <table> element. removing the setting fixed the issue. i also decreased the setting for <h2> tags and increased it for <li>, because the earlier version made lists outdented compared to text.
