Some background info: The files in question are a Java Subversion
client that was used in log4j builds from 29-Apr-2005 until 11-
May-2005 to checkout the SLF4J HEAD from slf4j.org. The files have
not been used since May 2005 and are not essential to an SLF4J
implementation. For more background, see http://issues.apache.org/
bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=34883.

In the initial SLF4J spin-off, the log4j build was modified to
checkout the latest SLF4J source code from slf4j.org SVN repository
before building log4j. This would make it impossible to reproduce a
log4j build since there was no way to isolate the build from whatever
changes occurred in the SLF4J SVN repository. The initial action for
bug 34883 eliminated the SVN checkout and allowed controlling the
SLF4J implementation in the manner used by all other external
dependencies. Only much later was that direct SLF4J implementation
removed after it began to substantially lag behind the current SLF4J
release.

I had not realized that they were still in our SVN, but noticed them
scroll by in the repeated fresh checkouts that I had been doing for
the alpha8 release. Since the files were no longer used and with no
immediate prospect of being used, it seemed easier to delete them
instead of dealing with licensing issues. I did a fun browse through
the archives of legal-discuss@apache.org, but didn't find any clear
statement of proper attribution of JAR's in the SVN.

Curt,

These files are needed for SLF4J support. Except for your opposition to
SLF4J support while you are still working on
compatibility issues, there was no formal decision to eliminate such
support. Could you kindly put these files back?
