Any news about this?

If you think that splitting the contents of ~_~/.m2~_ between cache, config and user data is not feasible to do right now, *at the bare minimum* you could put everything under {{_$XDG_DATA_HOME/maven_}} (with a fallback to {{_/.local/share/maven_}})
