I forgot to comment on the way chat initiation works. To chat with a contact from the web application, you have to left click with the mouse on the contact in the roster dialog and then a chat tab opens allowing bidirectional chat with the contact.
If the contact starts a chat with you, and you don't have a chat tab opened, then the chat tab will automatically open allowing for chatting with the contact.
