ASF information brochure
========================

This folder contains the source and rendered files for the ASF information brochure.
The following sections describe how to use the brochure source files and how to modify
and adapt it.

# Translating the brochure

In order to translate the brochure, please file an issue in the ComDev issue tracker:
https://issues.apache.org/jira/projects/COMDEV

Once it is done, you can attach a file with the translation to the issue itself and we'll
take care of committing it to SVN. You will find the text to translate and more information
in the ComDev wiki:
https://cwiki.apache.org/confluence/display/COMDEV/ASF+Information+Brochure

# Modifying the brochure

If you want to directly modify the brochure and provide a complete translated version, you
can edit the source files (.xcf) using GIMP.

There are two separate files, one with the outside and another with the inside content.
You just need to open both and select the different text boxes and edit the text directly,
trying to keep things aligned.

## Alignment of items

In some cases, the translated text might have to be adjusted or re-aligned and re-centered
in the brochure. This is usually needed for the "OPEN", "INNOVATION", and "COMMUNITY" titles
in the first column of the outside brochure.

In order to re-center to a column, you can use the GIMP Alignment Tool as follows:

1. Pick the Selection Tool, to create a new Rectangle Selection.
2. Create a selection that goes from the left part of the column to the right one.
   The height and up/down position of the selection is irrelevant; it just needs to
   go from the left tot he right part of the desired column.
3. Once the selection is created, pick the Alignment Tool.
4. In the Tool Options, select "Relative to: Selection".
5. Click on the element you want to align. Once selected you'll see that the different
   aligned options in the Tool Options are now enabled.
6. Click the Align Center option.

## Generating the PDF version

In some versions of GIMP, it is possible that exporting the brochure to PDF using the
GIMP "File > Export as..." option results in an ugly PDF where some texts are shown
very small (it might be also a defect in the default brochure; patches welcome!).

In order to create a proper PDF, you can use the "Print" dialog and "Print to PDF".
Make sure to configure the page and image options as follows:

* Page Setup
  - Paper size: A4
  - Page Setup: Landscape
  - Scale: 100%
* Image Settings
  - "Ignore page margins" must be selected.

Once the outsude and inside files are exported, you can join them into a single file
using your preferred tool. Take care of configuring the **outside first**, and the
**inside as the second page**.

In Mac OSX you can easily do that using the PDF preview tool.
