Existing tests do not cover it and twice now we have introduced bugs here because it is not an obvious place to look for CF serialization code.
Even better would be to not have CF serialization code duplicated there at all.

SequenceFile got rewritten a while ago so now there is only a single place for serialization, and it is actually tested.
