This appears to be resolved on current master. `JsonKafkaSource` now exposes the `hoodie.deltastreamer.source.kafka.json.value.deserializer.class` config (default `StringDeserializer`, `sinceVersion = 1.1.0`) which is wired into the underlying Kafka consumer's `value.deserializer`. The handling for non-string deserializer values is also covered in `getValueAsString` / `filterForNullValues`. See `hudi-utilities/src/main/java/org/apache/hudi/utilities/sources/JsonKafkaSource.java` (added in commit b359f76 / PR #12864). Could the reporter confirm and close if no further work is needed?
