   I took another look at the problem and came up with the following refactoring https://github.com/tillrohrmann/flink/tree/FLINK-10774. The relevant commit is https://github.com/tillrohrmann/flink/commit/03a619125b4ed4af07aff25327e04ad51c9e8559. 
   
   I would be interested in hearing your opinion @stevenzwu and especially @tzulitai whether this would solve the problem.
