Subject: why do we keep all versions
To: user@couchdb.apache.org
Hello,
if I understood it correctly each change of a document leads to a change of
the version of the document. And each version remains in the database. This
means that the amount of data grows in dependence of changes. Is that
correct?
Thanks
Hermann

Yes, this is true because of the append only database format. Old
revisions can be removed and storage space optimised by doing a database
is compacted. A compaction can be triggered manually (POST to
/db/_compact, or use Compact & Cleanup in Futon) or a rule written for
the compaction daemon to do this automatically, see the default.ini for
examples.
