What motivates this change for me, do you mean? Basically it's the local 
branches management which I find the most appealing with git, among 
other things. Something that is hardly solved otherwise than with 
duplicating and symlinking local checkouts when using svn.

I would opt for the most basic migration: one repository for each svn 
trunk. I think the site can stay on svn for now, since svn is implied in 
the publication process. So:

  - velocity-master
  - velocity-engine
  - velocity-tools

We have the interesting option of dual master repositories (for engine 
and tools), which allows pushes both on apache gitbox and github. That 
will ease merge requests integration.

Where did this request come from?
I wouldn't mind that. We need to discuss which repos and how many we 
need. Git isn't Subversion. Though, I am fine with both.
