This is an interesting issue. Do you have any suggestions as to other ways we
might access the functionality of CharToByte while still permitting static
compilation in these environments? Depending on the nio package would be even
more problematic because of the extent to which Xerces is employed and compiled
on pre JDK 1.4 environments.
