[Bug 120299] New: Spellcheck dictionary appears empty

https://issues.apache.org/ooo/show_bug.cgi?id=120299

          Priority: P3
            Bug ID: 120299
                CC: ooo-issues@incubator.apache.org
          Assignee: issues@lingucomponent.openoffice.org
           Summary: Spellcheck dictionary appears empty
          Severity: normal
        Issue Type: DEFECT
    Classification: Code
                OS: Windows 7
          Reporter: royclee@cableone.net
          Hardware: PC
            Status: UNCONFIRMED
           Version: AOO 3.4.0
         Component: spell checking
           Product: lingucomponent

Spellcheck either auto or manual appears to work. But, the English (US0 acts
as if it is empty; even simple words are indicated to be misspelled.

I did not have this problem with version 3.3x, but since I upated OpenOffice
with 3.4, I've had this problem. I've uninstalled and reinstalled from
OpenOffice.org three or four times. It did not help. All the Writing Aids
appear to be set properly.

CCing Andre.

@Andre: this bug might be related to those bugs where the spell checker marks
all words as wrong. It looks like the user had dictionary extensions in his
user profile from previous OOo versions and the Extension Manager didn't know
how to handle it.

The user informed in a private mail that

- the Extension Manager didn't show any extensions
- when trying to install http://numbertext.org/tmp/dict-en.oxt the Extension
Manager failed and he got a message saying dict-en does not exit

The user solved the issue by
- removing the user profile,
- restarting OpenOffice
- disabling ALL English dictionaries EXCEPT "English spelling and hyphenation
dictionaries and thesaurus" 2010.03.16

@Anyone:

How do we handle this kinds of bugs? Resolving them as fixed? The user's
problem was indeed fixed, but the bug was not confirmed nor the root cause of
the bug discovered / solved.

There might be a conflict between the different en-US dictionaries (they are
installed as extensions).

Go to the menu "Tools" - "Extension Manager..." and remove all the
English dictionaries (Canadian, etc), leaving only the one that says

"English spelling and hyphenation dictionaries and thesaurus" 2010.03.16

Then restart OpenOffice (shutdown the Quickstarter too).

If this does not solve your problem, then remove *all* en-US dictionaries, and
install only http://numbertext.org/tmp/dict-en.oxt
