Did you perform an upgrade from 3.3 to 3.4, or made a clean install?
Upgrading is broken on Linux, so you will have to uninstall every OpenOffice
package, make sure that there are no remaining OpenOffice folders in /opt/,
then install OpenOffice 3.4
After installing 3.4, it will be also a good idea to start with a new user
profile, removing/reanaming ~/.openoffice.org
