FW: proper fop command line

 Hi Andreas, all

Just confirming a couple of things:

- I have my Java_Home environment variable pointing to the root of
jdk1.5.0_09, the version I got installed. I see the FOP downloads labeled
jdk1.3 and jdk1.4. I assume my JDK version should be backward compatible and
this could not be the problem. Any doubt?

- The same fo file that I mentioned works fine on oXygen (I'm trying to find
out what fop version it runs); this same file produces good output when I
run fop-0.20.4 - But, all tables are removed and their areas replaced by
equal-dimensioned space. Does this mean anything, or is there a known fix
for this issue for fop 0.2?

Thanks again
Khaled

OK, see the section on 'Source Download' for more info, and if you're
serious about having a go, this page will be handy as well: http://
xmlgraphics.apache.org/fop/trunk/compiling.html

Simply means that the only binaries ('-bin') you can currently
download are /released/ versions.
The latest development code is not offered as binary. If you want to
use it, you will need to check it out from the Subversion repo,
download and install Apache Ant, and build the fop.jar yourself.

Cheers

Sorry again: what means not serve them? I see there is a last update
date next to each src or binary?

Cheers...

Sorry, I always forget that this doesn't ring a bell with fop-
users... :(

Anyway, FOP Trunk is the latest source code as available in the
Subversion repository. Development on FOP is never halted. Sometimes
there is very little activity, but since the 0.94 release, there have
already been a number of improvements/fixes (for which we greatly
depend on you, the users, to make us aware of them).

For more info, see also: http://xmlgraphics.apache.org/fop/download.html

Well, the fix probably didn't make it into the release (fixed
sometime between August and now), and we do not serve binaries off
the Trunk. Maybe oXygen has something in its documentation on how you
can update the bundled fop.jar. If this is possible, you could build
one off the Trunk, and replace the fop.jar that should be located
somewhere in oXygen's directory structure.

Cheers

Andreas

Andreas

What do you mean by the FOP trunk?
I ensured the error was there on both Apache FOP download page and
oXygen 9Beta2, which has just been released last week (though doesn't
mean its embedded FOP 0.94 fix had been updated).

Thanks
Khaled

Yes, very probably by Jeremias in revision 584699 (table-cells with
empty content).

Khaled, this is not an error if the header has only one cell and all the
other rows have 2 cells. This simply means that the header has a missing
cell (which is different to an empty cell (!), mainly in terms of border
painting... if I’m correct). FOP Trunk accepts both cases.

You can work around the problem by putting a non-breaking space in the
empty cells. You won’t even have to put a second cell in the header.

HTH,
Vincent

Hi Khaled / Vincent,

As a heads-up: I just tried running the attached FO through FOP
trunk, and it seems to work fine.

Seems that the issue then is restricted to the 0.94 release, but has
been resolved in the meantime (?)

Hi Vincent

Just having reduced the FO to the table where the problem was, I found there
was an error on my behalf. While every other row had two cells, the header
row where the problem was had only one cell with the empty block. With two
cells as should be, and at least one of them non-empty, a good pdf output is
generated. But when I made both cell blocks empty, there is the same error I
mentioned before - without the "Replacing GU in slot..." lines.

In spite of my error, I note:

- FOP 0.94 should still have accepted two cells each with an empty block,
according to Andreas statement.
- The initial incorrect layout of one cell with an empty block was processed
ok by FOP 0.93.
- FO validates well in all cases.

I attach the reduced FO, console error response, and the good PDF with just
one empty block.

Thanks for taking interest.

Regards
Khaled

It seems like you have also stumbled into the bug that has been
mentioned a couple of times:
see http://issues.apache.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=43766

It's not a violation of the XSL-FO Rec to use empty fo:blocks in
fo:table-cells. It is only a requirement to have at least one
fo:block child, but nothing mandates the block to have children as well.

Cheers

RE: proper fop command line

Thanks Andreas for your willingness to help. I got it working fine with
0.93, which is the version used by oXygen 8.2 (that's why I never noticed
there was a problem; somehow 0.93 is forgiving about the particular issue).
When I tried same on oXygen 9Beta, running FOP 0.94, it failed there too but
the error msg was more informative than the console one, indicating
something to do with tables. Recalling FOP 0.2 had removed the tables, I
used your advice to rule out, just focusing on tables. I found this problem:

<fo:table table-layout="fixed" width="100%">
<fo:table-header>
<fo:table-row>
<fo:table-cell>
<fo:block font-size="9pt" font-family="sans-serif" font-weight="bold"/>
<<<<< 0.94 required a non-empty block
</fo:table-cell>
</fo:table-row>
</fo:table-header>
. . .

Still curious why 0.2 rejected all the fo tables although they were all just
basic and not all had the above "violation"! But likely there is no need to
use this version. It was fun working the day through to get to know FOP that
'much' better :-| Enough to figure that 0.94 is more strictly XSL 1.1
compliant, but I couldn't find an explicit requirement in the specification
about the block content. Hope I didn't bore you.

Cheers
Khaled
