[users@httpd] Can't find index.html

I set out to learn Linux after 19 years in the Windows biz and got
everything working pretty well....TightVNC, FTP, SSH but Apache 2 on
RedHat 8.0 is just killing me (about 9 hours on apache.org, redhat.com,
man files, etc. till 5:30am).

I simply need to set up 4 or 5 virtual web sites, very simple 'brochure'
type sites. I'm using the redhat-config-httpd tool and it seems that no
matter what I do (blindly trying every option I could think of) all I
get is the default "Test Page". However if I also include the name of
the page ( ie http://test.screenplays.bz/index.html) the web page comes
up just fine.

Under "Site Configuration" for the "Virtual Host Properties" I do have
index.html listed under the "Directory Page Search List".

Here's what the resulting httpd.conf. looks like...

    NameVirtualHost test.screenplays.bz

    LockFile "/var/lock/httpd.lock"
    CoreDumpDirectory "/etc/httpd"

    # Virtual host test.screenplays.bz
    <VirtualHost test.screenplays.bz>
            DocumentRoot /var/www/html/screenplays/
            ServerName test.screenplays.bz
            <Directory "/var/www/html/screenplays">
                    AllowOverride none
            </Directory>
            <Directory "/">
                    AllowOverride none
            </Directory>
            <Directory "/var/www/html/screenplays/">
                    AllowOverride none
            </Directory>
            LogLevel debug
            HostNameLookups off

Any clues would be GREATLY appreaciated. For simplicity sake, I'd like
to continue to use the GUI tool to manage this but httpd.conf edits are
fine, too. TIA!

Re: [users@httpd] A, CNAME, or M

Posted by Jimmy McDonald <io...@bsdshell.dyndns.org>.
An A record associates an ip address with a name and
a PTR accosciates a name with an address. CNAMEs are aliases.
MX records are Mail Exchange entries and point to mail servers.

Apache really has nothing to do with DNS.

Are you using bind to set up DNS?
Are you using Windows DNS server?
Are you using a web based DNS service?

Since this this off topic, mail me back privately.
I probably won't be around much until late tonight
but I can help you out then.

Jimmy

[users@httpd] A, CNAME, or M

Posted by "Jason P." <jp...@attbi.com>.
How do I determine those, since I am using Apache and am using a DNS
service pointing to my computer (thru the domain registrar) and I am not
sure what the prefix is going to be.

It errors out.

Errors for ILLUSIVEDREAMS.NET:
The prefix you have entered: blank is incorrect.
For A record you must set up Address field with a valid IP.
Errors for ILLUSIVEDREAMS.ORG:
The prefix you have entered: blank is incorrect.
For A record you must set up Address field with a valid IP.

Thanks
Jason

I am so sorry I didn't see your post sooner,

under your Options directive add +Multiviews

example:

Options +Indexes -SymLinks +Multiviews

the key here is the +Multiviews

I spent about five hours until 3:00 am two night sago, until someone
pointed this out to me too.

I'm running 1.3.27 but you should be ok with this...

HTH, regards,

Ahbaid Gaffoor
