How do you support column encryption in Iceberg?

Hi community,

I would like to check with you to see if anyone has implemented "column
encryption" type of features on Iceberg or is planning to implement/
explore this.

For context, my organization has a lot of tables that contain columns of
different levels of sensitivity and we want to impose access control on
column level so that users with different permissions can share the same
table instead of duplicating datasets (our current approach).

Appreciate the response in advance!

Certainly, this will be shared with the community for a
discussion/collaboration. Hard to estimate timelines atm, but hopefully a
patch can be sent a few months after the current (table level encryption)
design is finalized.

Cheers, Gidon

Thanks for sharing Gidon. I wonder if this work is currently being built
internally in your organization? Do you plan to contribute back to Iceberg
OSS and do you plan to engage with the community for collaboration? If you
can share rough timelines of these, that will be great. Thanks.
