apache is just a proxy to the actual AVS query server, right ?

Hmmm... The front end might be apache, on something (either DU or Linux),
but the hard part is the search engines in back.

In the past (I don't know the current state), the HTTP front end for
AltaVista was a (pair of) Alpha workstations running Digital UNIX, with
a special purpose Web server written by Mike Burrows (highly thread
based).

The front end systems talk via a special purpose protocol to a farm of
VERY big Alpha systems running Digital UNIX (8 or 10 processor systems
with 6 gig of main memory and very large RAID systems). 64 bits are really
needed; the index is much larger than 6 gigabytes in size, and that
represents the working set required to deal with it efficiently. The farm
in Palo Alto was around 16 systems, the last I heard.

So the HTTP part represents maybe a couple percent of the work each
AV query represents.

They split the index a while back, to be able to scale the size yet further.
There are alot of tricks to try to route requests to the "right" backend
server, most likely to have things in its cache.

While I'm a Linux bigot these days, Linux doesn't yet handle the kind
of situations that Digital UNIX can for large servers.

It is conceivable that Apache is being used as a replacement for Mike
Burrows' Web server these days; if people are interested, I can find out.

But the real magic in the system are the back end servers and the indexing
and crawling system; the front ends were never terribly hard to do (though
Apache wasn't fast enough early on (or even exist)).

According to Rasmus Lerdorf:

Check out slashdot.org :-)
On the other hand, AltaVista-Germany is one of our customers...

ciao...

How do you know it is RedHat?
