I guess the default jar binary should work here.

lens-dist/src/deb/control/postinst
<https://reviews.apache.org/r/29706/#comment111411>

    lens-config.sh uses following to find jar :

    if test -z ${JAVA_HOME}
    then
        JAVA_BIN=`which java`
        JAR_BIN=`which jar`
    else
        JAVA_BIN=${JAVA_HOME}/bin/java
        JAR_BIN=${JAVA_HOME}/bin/jar
    fi

    and run expansion thru

    $JAR_BIN -xf ${BASEDIR}/webapp/lens-server.war

    Is the current change fine? - I'm OK with it, as verison of java shouldnt matter for expansion

Depends on requirements. This change is only required, if we have a requirement to do maven variable substitutions while creating debian of lens-client-dist.

Yes we should. Will make this change. Will also remove /usr/local/lens from other places in the same file as well.

As discussed with Rajat offline, Objective: "sometimes when my changes are localized to a module, I build only that jar and put it directly inside WEB-INF/lib of the expanded war." is still achievable.

    Shouldn't always remove and re-expand the war.

    The earlier setup provided a hook for updating a jar inside the war and restarting the server for quick (test/dev) deployment. Now we'll have to bundle the war each time. e.g. sometimes when my changes are localized to a module, I build only that jar and put it directly inside WEB-INF/lib of the expanded war. This change takes away that hook.

    Instead, we should delete the expanded war on each re-deployment. Let's not modify lens-ctl, only debian steps.
