Public demo instance hosted by third party
We've been trying to get a demo instance of Bloodhound set up for some
time. Currently the effort is still stuck with ASF Infra [1].
I believe it's a critical tool for generating interest and recruiting more
contributors though.
WANdisco will soon set up a [last-stable] and [nightly build] demo instance
for Bloodhound, and I believe we should link to it at least until our
own (apache project) instance is running.
If there are no objections I will circulate the links to the instance once
it's up and running and subsequently add them to our Wiki where appropriate.
Cheers,
Joe

The VM name is fine. I guess something like bh-demo-<name>.a.o might be
worth going for but I would also be happy to distinguish the demos with
something like bh-demo.a.o/<name>/
In case it is helpful to know now, the two demos we expect to start with
would probably be:
* current - the latest official release
* nightly - the current trunk, obviously rebuilt once a day
I think there was also a suggestion of having any upcoming release
demoed over the voting period, although we may have to balance any
benefit of that against the possibility that votes will be made only on
the basis of such a demo.
Cheers,
Gary

I've got my eye on doing this rsn, just the backlog of projects jumping
last minute with the
svnpubsub/cms deadlines has kept us busy.
I will start the VM today.
what service urls do you want?
I suggest a machine (VM) name of bloodhound-vm2.a.o with service urls of
something like
bh-demo1.a.o , bh-demo2.a.o etc ?
Thanks

Indeed I think the ASF VM should be our first priority. I'm talking about a
temporary solution until then, not an advertising drive.
I recognise that this could be a slippery slope (regarding user
perception), but I feel confident enough that the lack of slope (ie users)
is more important at this point. Hopefully Gary's change to the ticket and
comment will achieve some progress.

I think your ticket went in at almost the same moment that a whole bunch
of VMs died and needing rebuilding, and that nearly 50% of all PMCs
suddenly remembered the svnpubsub 18 month deadline was about to hit and
they really needed to do something...! Infra work miracles, but there are
limits to even their powers ;-)
Luckily Gav has some cycles again, so if people can give him answers to
his queries, it'll hopefully be sorted shortly!

It may well be that we have not pushed hard enough on the ticket but it
is the first ticket we have raised that did not generate some kind of
response relatively quickly. I've updated the ticket to remove the extra
question, leaving the details of what I think we want and a few details
of how we will subsequently use the resource.
Any other advice would be good!
I don't think Joe is suggesting that we stop trying to get the VM of
course. I still work on the assumption that we will get the VM
eventually or get given appropriate advice on infra provided alternatives.
Cheers,
Gary

Agreed. Let's not be hasty in selling ASF infra short.
Besides, Bloodhound is too dependent upon WANdisco as it is. Going in
this direction may get you into the same trap that Subversion used to be
in, where potential users perceived it as being "owned" by CollabNet and
were wary about adopting it because of that.

It might be worth engaging with infra on this. It's possible that by
asking several different things in one ticket (vm, build infra etc), it
has confused things. Hopefully someone from infra could advise on what's
needed to get it all moving (potentially by splitting out the build
queries)
