My symptoms are a little different than what others have described.

1. I had to download a presentation template.  It is a .pptx file.  OpenOffice
crashes immediately on opening it.  

2. I had someone else open it and save as on .odp file.  I can open this file,
but it crashes if I go a few pages down.  I tried deleting the problem page,
but the problem just moved to a different page.

3. OpenOffice works correctly for other files; always fails for this file.

4. I tried renaming my profile folder as described elsewhere: there was no
improvement.
