Tomcat newbie
Need help getting Tomcat 3.0. to run with Apache 1.3.9 on Windows NT sp
4. I've followed the instructions from the "Tomcat+Apache HOWTO" with
no success.
I run apache and I get the following output:
[Thu Apr 06 11:03:12 2000] [warn] pid file d:/apache/logs/httpd.pid
overwritten -- Unclean shutdown of previous Apache run?
Apache/1.3.9 (Win32) ApacheJServ/1.1 running...
I connect to the apache server ok using: http://127.0.0.1/
But get no response using: http://127.0.0.1/examples
Thanks in advance.

Hi Bryan !
Do NOT follow the HOWTO ! I did that and came to grief pretty quickly. The
instructions for setting it up come with the tomcat.zip file. Follow the
Readme file inside there (it's not really called README -- I can't remember
what the filename is, but you can find it in the tomcat distribution. As far
as I can tell, the HOWTO refers to a very early version of Tomcat (or it is
completely wrong).

war files !!
Posted by mailmetoday <ma...@mailmetoday.com>.
Hi everybody,
I have some questions:
1. What is the function of war files and how to make them?
2. What roles do manifest files play and why are they always included in the
META-INF directory?
3. Do we always have to include the WEB-INF and META-INf directories in the
directory that we make?
Thanks in advance,
Manpreet Singh.

Re: Tomcat newbie
Posted by Greg Monroe <mo...@mail.Duke.Edu>.
Do you have the Tomcat server running? The module is not a "run TomCat
as an Apache module". It takes requests that need to be processed by
TomCat and forwards them to the TomCat server. If the Tomcat server is
not running you will get this sort of message.
If Tomcat is running and this is occuring, try telnetting into port
8007 on your machine. If you can connect, press enter and look at the
Tomcat window for some Exceptions being thrown. If this fails, then
check your Tomcat server.xml files for the following uncommented lines:
<Connector className="org.apache.tomcat.service.SimpleTcpConnector">
<Parameter name="handler"
value="org.apache.tomcat.service.connector.Ajp12ConnectionHandler"/>
<Parameter name="port" value="8007"/>
</Connector>
If this is there, check that nothing else is running on port 8007.
Good luck.

RE: Tomcat newbie
Posted by Andrew Cathrow <ac...@seagull.nl>.
I think you said that you were using tomcat 3.0 initially - and you have now
downloaded the 3.1beta DLL.
Firstly go back to your original dll. Before we do anything we need to check
if tomcat is running.
So you started apache, and got the PID message (which you can ignore at this
stage) and a Apache J/Serv message - which indicates that apache started ok
- and had loaded the dll.
At this point apache knows to forward requests to tomcat - but you need to
make sure that tomcat is started.
In the folder where you installed tomcat there is a startup batch file. Run
it. And look for errors.
This batch file kicks off another file (tomcat.bat) in a new window. You may
get an error if it can't find some java classes.
Once this is up - try again to get to the samples.
If this doesn't work the first thing that you must do is see if the problem
is with tomcat or with apache passing requests to tomcat. So try to talk
directly to tomcat http://127.0.0.1:8080
If this works then you know the issue is with apache.
Please forward your results.
regards,
Aic

Re: Tomcat newbie

The jakarta.apache.org site sends out .dll files as plain/text. This
causes Win32 browsers to not download the file corrects. Try
downloading the zip version of the dll.
http://jakarta.apache.org/builds/tomcat/release/v3.1_beta_1/bin/win32/i386/ApacheModuleJServ.dll.zip
Oh, the pid message just means you probably ended Apache abnormally
rather than with the proper command.
