[jira] Created: (HADOOP-1066) http://lucene.apache.org/hadoop/ front page is not user-friendly

http://lucene.apache.org/hadoop/ front page is not user-friendly
----------------------------------------------------------------

                 Key: HADOOP-1066
                 URL: https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/HADOOP-1066
             Project: Hadoop
          Issue Type: Improvement
          Components: documentation
            Reporter: Marco Nicosia
            Priority: Minor

One of our tech writers has been looking at the state of Hadoop documentation, and suggests reworking the Hadoop front page to be more than just a release page (as it seems to be now).

Especially in comparison with other other apache project pages, ours is uninviting to users unfamiliar with the premise of the project. She's suggesting updating the page to include more meta-information about the site, in addition to most of the links and news items currently on the page.

I think there's one item that's been added to trunk since you copied these (0.13.1 release). And we should probably truncate news to the last five or so items too.

> is project root /, or /trunk?

The trunk/ is a project root, as are things under branches/. Most patches are relative to trunk/.

> and what is a "patch"

The output of 'svn diff'. Note that you must add new files with 'svn add' before generating the diff.

--------------------------------------

This looks great! A few minor comments:

1. The 'news' is a bit out of date. This should be refreshed before this is committed.

2. We probably don't need to list more than the past few releases in 'releases'.

3. I can't get 'forrest' to build this. I can preview it with 'forrest -run', but otherwise I get:

{code}
validate-xdocs:
/home/cutting/src/hadoop/trunk/src/docs/src/documentation/content/xdocs/index.xml:26:9: The content of element type "p" must match "(strong|em|code|sub|sup|br|img|icon|acronym|map|a)".
/home/cutting/src/hadoop/trunk/src/docs/src/documentation/content/xdocs/index.xml:29:164: The content of element type "acronym" must match "null".
/home/cutting/src/hadoop/trunk/src/docs/src/documentation/content/xdocs/index.xml:45:11: The content of element type "p" must match "(strong|em|code|sub|sup|br|img|icon|acronym|map|a)".
/home/cutting/src/hadoop/trunk/src/docs/src/documentation/content/xdocs/index.xml:57:11: The content of element type "p" must match "(strong|em|code|sub|sup|br|img|icon|acronym|map|a)".
{code}

This is with either forrest 0.7 or 0.8. What version are you running?

4. Patches should be relative to the project root, not to src/docs.

Thanks!

Looks great. However, the first line of text says "Hadoop is a
software platform lets one easily write and run applications that
process vast amounts of data." It's missing the word "that" after
"platform".

Also, the word "one" is passive. "you" would be better.

I just fixed that. Thanks for noticing!

> seems like it would have been best to commit the patch verbatim and submit a second patch?

I probably should have posted my version of the patch before committing it, to get feedback. Sorry.

The goal of my changes was primarily to make it so that we're not replicating a lot of information that's kept more accurately elsewhere, like the list of current versions and the list of current release notes. So I removed that table and added a link to Jira. Now, when we make a release, we don't need to update the documentation.

+1 For a start, the "About" page should probably be merged into the top of the "News" (index.html) page. Also, the PoweredBy and HowToContribute wiki pages should probably be linked to directly from the "Project" and "Developer" sections respectively.

It appears that the "News" link in the left hand menu does not jump down to the News section as it should. It is using "News" as the a-reference, but the two a-references in the page for the appropriate heading are "N1003A" and "Project+News".

Good feedback, thanks. If the intro text and the architectural diagram work, that's great. They're aimed at a new visitor who might ask "What is this and what makes it good?"

Adding a Download page: I completely agree. I put a link (but called Releases) in the navigation column on the left. That might not have shown up until I got the right CSS loaded. If you look at it again, remember that it just shows structure; I'm assuming we'll have the look and feel of the Forrest template.

I can also beef up the Issue Tracking page.

I'm working on a trajectory for improving the site based on audience and some usability concepts. This is just the first step, but it's the front page so it's pretty visible.

    Attachment: svndiff.txt

I updated the Forrest files to match the html that has been submitted. Well, mostly match.

The problem is that i wasn't able to replicate the one-click left nav design from the html in Forrest--I was only able to get drop-down menus. One option would be to replicate the left nav in tabs in Forrest, as the tabs are href-able.

Let me know what people think or if there is a better way to communicate these changes.

Learn About: I do like the idea of a documentation overview page with links to the authoritative information. (I'd like to add more over time.) I'd also like to see us change the navigation link to User Documentation to distinguish it from the Developer link. How does that sound?

News vs Releases: On other sites, the News page (if it exists) lists things like conference announcements, who's giving a talk where, media attention, really big releases, calls to action. Could we eliminate it until we have such announcements?

Install and configure: I'll update the link.

BTW, I don't have an easy way to mock up how the sections in the navigation panel (on the left) open and close. It's a little counter intuitive that the titles don't lead to a page. Not sure if that's locked in by Forrest or not.

Agreed. I think what I was suggesting was all user focused
documentation that answers user's questions such as:
  - how do I determine the latest stable release?
  - when can I expect the next release?
  - what is getting fixed/added in the next release?

+1. I suggest something like hadoop-site-localhost.xml or localhost-
cluster.xml. This could be the fix for
https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/HADOOP-1267

I agree that all this stuff should be somewhere prominent on the site,
but we need to be careful not to mix developer documentation with
end-user documentation. In particular, the concern is that end-users
should not be encouraged to build from subversion, use nightly builds,
etc. Releases are ASF products, with certain legal guarantees, and
other builds are not ASF products, but only for ASF-internal use.
Developers are considered ASF insiders for this purpose. This policy
saves us if, e.g., something legally suspect sneaks into subversion so
long as it is removed before a release.

> hadoop-site config file that fulfills the "pseudo distributed
> configuration" on this overview page page?

No good reason. We could include a confg/pseudo-cluster.xml file, that
folks could use with 'bin/hadoop -conf conf/pseudo-cluster.xml ...'.

+1 for an overview page.

+1 for separate pages. Perhaps the releases section could be fleshed
out with more info on our "stable" link, our roadmap (link to Jira
roadmap?), and our release process (ie, what we agree to in
HADOOP-1161).

+1. Doug, can you remind me why we don't ship hadoop-default or
hadoop-site config file that fulfills the "pseudo distributed
configuration" on this overview page page?

I think "learn about" link should point to a documentation overview page, not just to the top-level wiki. This should include the FAQ, the javadocs and the wiki. The wiki alone should not the authoritative documentation, should it?

Should "news" be under "releases" on the same page, or should these be separate pages?

The "install and configure" link should point to:

[jira] Issue Comment Edited: (HADOOP-1066) http://lucene.apache.org/hadoop/ front page is not user-friendly

Jeff Hammerbacher edited comment on HADOOP-1066 at 7/31/07 3:22 PM:
--------------------------------------------------------------------

not going to submit an official patch, just change (in "site.xml"):

  <project label="Project">
    <releases  label="Releases"           href="releases.html" />
    <news      label="News"               href="releases.html#News" />
...

to

  <project label="Project">
    <releases  label="Releases"           href="releases.html" />
    <news      label="News"               href="releases.html#Project+News" />
...

also, the wording on releases.xml should be change, since now it says "This page lists release numbers along with their dates and a link to release notes. You can obtain releases from a nearby mirror.", which is no longer true.

(significant edits were made to the patch before committing -- seems like it would have been best to commit the patch verbatim and submit a second patch?)

The -1 from Hadoop QA is due to the patch being html and not forrest xml. Once we've agreed on the html version, we'll may need a volunteer to convert it to forrest.

okay, i will keep only the most recent 5 releases on the releases page. as for the news stuff: what would you like added/removed/changed? let me know and i'll make the change.

i'll make it validate.

is project root /, or /trunk? and what is a "patch"--i.e. what is the best way to submit my altered content so that it is ready to be submitted to the codebase?

[jira] Commented: (HADOOP-1066) http://lucene.apache.org/hadoop/ front page is not user-friendly

    [ https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/HADOOP-1066?page=com.atlassian.jira.plugin.system.issuetabpanels:comment-tabpanel#action_12488133 ]

Doug Cutting commented on HADOOP-1066:
--------------------------------------

This looks good to me. It would be better if a few more of the links in the "Getting Started" and "Getting Involved" section pointed to pages in the website, rather than directly to the wiki or to Jira. This will make the documentation (which is included in releases) more standalone.

In particular:

We might either add an "install and configure" page to the site, or point to the front page of the javadoc, which contains such information:

http://lucene.apache.org/hadoop/api/overview-summary.html#overview_description

We should add a "download" page.

The "feedback" link should not point to jira, but rather to http://lucene.apache.org/hadoop/issue_tracking.html. That page should also probably include advice about first searching the mail archives, asking questions on the user list, and searching the bug database before filing a new issue.

not going to submit an official patch, just change (in "site.xml"):

  <project label="Project">
    <releases  label="Releases"           href="releases.html" />
    <news      label="News"               href="releases.html#News" />
...

to

  <project label="Project">
    <releases  label="Releases"           href="releases.html" />
    <news      label="News"               href="releases.html#Project+News" />
...

also, the wording on releases.xml should be change, since now it says "This page lists release numbers along with their dates and a link to release notes. You can obtain releases from a nearby mirror.", which is no longer true.
