help with getPortletByName

Hi, 
I'm trying out several way to make use of $jslink and can't seem to get getPortletByName to work.  
 
I can get getPaneByName to work by adding a name="panename" inside default.psml file.  Also getPortletByID work fine.
 
any help/direction/documentation are greatly appreciated.
