Using {{dependencyManagement}} tag in parent is considered a best practice and can eliminate several issues including helping with [transitive dependencies issue|http://stackoverflow.com/questions/2619598/differences-between-dependencymanagement-and-dependencies-in-maven] and to get tool support if child projects use different versions.
