I use Ultraedit32 for all windows text file editing. Great program. Reads
very large file instantly.
Saves to your name, does not add any extensions. Saves to .httaccess no
problem.

Put the file name in quotes to avoid having the default extension
appended. So "myfile" is really myfile, but myotherfile becomes
myotherfile.txt.

Must be an OS thing. NT4 works fine - does not add a .txt extension.
Could just be Windows 9x ???

When you do 'save as', be sure to change the 'Save as type:' box to 'All
Files (*.*)'. Or, better yet, get a sane text editor and run it on a
sane OS. ;)

Unless you are using win2k, then notepad will save it as .htaccess.txt.
Ever saved a file named something.txt? It's really saved as
something.txt.txt!

I've found it useful to still use .htaccess on Windows machines (where I
do my development) as I do not need to then rename the file when I
upload it to my hosting company (which requires files called .htaccess).

thanks for the advice guys
anyway I got some more questions

1. What is the order in which the directives are processed ?
2. mime.types file lists out a lot of types but where can I learn about the
mime types ?
For example suppose I have a video file in a directory
http://www.xyz.com/my_video.asf
it is in the asf format
now how do I make or edit a mime entry for it what mime type would it be ?
where can I learn about all the mime types ?
3. similary where can I get a list of all the user-agent headers possible
with all the browsers out there ?, so that I may use in setenvif or
browsermatch

That suggestion is fine. A couple alternatives:

1. Find a program that does allow saving files with dot names. Not all
windows programs are so stupid as to forbid this.

2. Use a different name for ".htaccess" files by setting the
AccessFilename directive. For example,
AccessFilename ht.access
will allow you to use ht.access as the name.

Trying to rename a file to .htaccess in Windows Explorer is not allowed,
but you can save a file called .htaccess from Notepad.
