IMHO, the patches available at Geronimo-1317 should be applied. These patches essentally  rename newi goals and allow the 'includes' and 'excludes' defined in etc/project.properties files to work. Currently things defined in etc/project.properties have no effect!
The new names are more user friendly, e.g. 
new3 -   m:geronimo:applications
new4  -  m:geronimo:configs
new5 -   m:geronimo:assemblies
