Migrate to Git?
Hi all,
I heard at ApacheCon Europe that it should be possible to migrate from
Subverion to Git.
Is there any interest in doing that? If we decide to do it I suggest to
wait until the
1.5.3 release is done so we have a bit time to also migrate our build
process.
Do have all committers experience with git?

Thanks for your advice, if there are no concerns I will follow Chris

The first step is to get us setup on git-wp. I will fill an issue with
infra to do this for us.

Do you know if there is a tool we can use offline to convert the cms
content we have to HTML?
Otherwise it might be easier for now to stay with subversion for the site.

Agreed, let’s see how it works and then move from there. FYI there is GitPubSub
for the website so we could do Git for the site so long as we generate it offline and
check into Git.

For now the site will stay in svn since the CMS we use doesn't support
git.
Infra says they can only migrate us to separate repositories with their
tooling. We can of course do what we like afterwards.
The state after the initial migration will be:
opennlp.git
opennlp-sandbox.git
opennlp-addons.git
I suggest we wait a bit and see how this discussion turns out until we
take further steps.

I usually use different eclipse workspaces for sandbox, addons and
tools. Therefore I never have the issue, also the build is seperate for
them.
We should probably rethinkg this addons thing, if the quality of a
component is good enough to be released with the tools it should just
be part of that repository, if it isn't it should be in sandbox.
Anyway, I believe I can life pretty well with both solutions. Seperate
or all in one.
Because of tooling limitations the folks at infra have they will now
set us up with seperate repositories to start with.
We should figure out what we want and turn it into a decision on how we
set things up.

We are an Open Source project and for IP issues it is important to be
able to see where contributions to our code base came from. Maybe the
history is not helpful in all cases, but it is still nice to have it.
Anyway, even if we remove folders from one of the other repositories
the history there will remain forever. In the case it has to be
accessed it will be there.

project makes it works just as well. Decent IDEs handle this easily.
On tracking history. The need to track history of experimental code
obfuscates its poor documentation. If the code if properly documented
(including documenting design decisions), there is no need to search
history. Moreover, if experimental code changed approach or algorithm
radically (with reasons that should be documented), the history might
confuse more than clarify.
Modulo tracking history, multiple modular repos are more flexible than one
jumbo repo.

I don't have a vote here, but I'd agree with Jörn: Separate repos will make
it more uncomfortable to track changes across components.
Should the project switch to a uniform versioning and joint releases, that
would also be more problematic.
The project is not particularly large. Having everything in a single
repo is more convenient and traceable.

neater to browse them like this:

I don't see the advantage of having multiple repositories, because that
makes it harder to check it out and move things around without loosing
history (git mv).

Fantastic, Joern! I have some SentimentAnalysis stuff to hopefully commit and
get refactored. Hopefully after that’s done we can ship a release soon and
publish to Central.

I've used both....
Only thing is I find SVN a little easier on the beginner.
Git has many options that aren't so obvious as to the purpose... until
you get your hands dirty. I've had several git projects get in a state
of not updating as a result.
