ANN: The 4th hbase 0.94.2 release candidate is available for download

The 4th 0.94.2 RC is available for download here: http://people.apache.org/~larsh/hbase-0.94.2-rc2/
Signed with my code signing key: C7CFE328 (Note the new key, signed by Stack.)

0.94.2 is a bug fix release. This 4th RC has 117 issues resolved against it. Over 40 developers contributed code and fixes to this release.
These are mostly bug fixes, but also include performance improvements, some replication fixes, and a compatibility fix with older 0.92 clusters.
(Special thanks to Gregory Chanan, who discovered two last minute problems in previous RCs)

The full list of changes is available here: https://issues.apache.org/jira/secure/IssueNavigator.jspa?reset=true&jqlQuery=project+%3D+HBASE+AND+fixVersion+%3D+%220.94.2%22+AND+status+%3D+Resolved+ORDER+BY+priority+DESC

The list of changes for this point release is getting long... Please take the RC for a spin, check out the doc, etc, and vote +1/-1 by October 12th on whether we should release this as 0.94.2.

You can find the new release testing spreadsheet here:
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0AvLqcVIqNtlTdDN6T2hjQ0lkOFlLYmk2S01FQ1RwSmc#gid=0
(if you test this release, please add your test to this spreadsheet, so that we can gauge the coverage)

Thanks.

+1

Checked documentation and shell.

Uploaded millions of rows to a standalone instance with PE. Confirmed
rows updated with RowCounter MR job.

Logs look fine except for the CleanerChore. Its messages are obnoxious
in number. Not enough to sink a release though. I made HBASE-7214 to
fix for 0.94.4.

Is that something that has been around w/ a while? Seems extremely rare
too?

If so, I'd suggest rolling out the release and then addressing it in 0.94.4?

I have downloaded the tar and installed it.

I configured snappy on it too ;)

I brought up the region servers one by one very slowly to let them
transition the regions from servers to servers, run few MapReduce
(Rowcounter and custom MR).

I moved regions, merged regions (offline), spitted regions and run
some compaction too and it's all working fine.

Anybody else who had a chance testing this release?

If we want to go a schedule of a release every 6 weeks or so, we might need to tweak the process.

Maybe announce RCs on the user list as well.

I'm +1 based on tests I've done.  I recompiled and built on top of hadoop
2.0.0-cdh4.0.1 and have  been running TestAcidGuarantees,
TestLoadAndVerify, and hbck while manually killing various region servers
and things seems to have come back fine with one exception.

Master failover (kill the master process, not kill -9) seems to cause jobs
to fail (these jobs create and delete tables).  This problem was present in
all previous versions so it is not worth sinking this one.  I've filed
HBASE-6960 to deal with this.

Did some small cluster insert tests and killed a region server. FWIW
we deployed something very close to 0.94.2 in production 2 weeks ago.
