Too gaudy to consider :-?

What do folks think of

http://www.apache.org/~wrowe/itworked.shtml

as a new graphic [ONLY FOR THE ITWORKED PAGE!]

I expect folks to love or hate it, not much in between.

I have a static of the final image. Note that the file size is acutally
smaller than the original powered-by graphic.

I'd also like (if it's possible) to put the server string on the first
page (e.g. the .shtml extension, although they aren't enabled in home
directories on this box.)

What I think is that you're a freak. It's cute, though.

I hate animated GIFs on principle, but okay.

	Yah, that would be good.

Gentlemen, it would be nice to have win32 msi distribution of the newest
apache server version each time the rest of the world (Unix and Linux) has
its gaudy allright.

Assuming this is all for the 2.0 servers, including
www.apache.org, I'd like to see the original graphic remain with its
current filename (think you planned this, but not certain).

1)	+1, add unanimated apache_pb2.gif with '2.0' in the image.
2)	-0, in favor of 4) -- don't really care which
3)	+1
4)	+1 -- this would be the only use of the animated graphic by
default, right?
5)	+1

Let me be a bit more specific ... are these changes desireable:

1. Add (unanimated) "2.0" to the Powered by graphic as "apache_pb2.gif"?

2. Use the (unanimated) "2.0" graphic on the it worked page?

3. Distribute an animated "2.0" as "apache_pb2_ani.gif"?

4. Use the animated "2.0" graphic on the default "it worked" page?

5. Add the serverstring as a server-side include.

I've already gotten rbb's opinion, who doesn't see any point to changing
the graphic whatsoever ("It's still Apache, right?")

I'm approaching this from the marketing/press people who want to see
the Apache 2 server (who are also asking how to write up the sound of one
hand clapping in print.)

If I get a buy on 1 or 3 I'll commit the image(s).

If I get a buy on 2, 4 or 5, I'll mass-update the index pages.

Sorry, I'm personally not a big fan. But I don't blame that on you.
Frankly, I've never liked the powered-by graphic at all, or any of the
gradient-blue-to-red-to-orange-colored feather variants, for that matter.

I'd agree, more comments inline ...

Ok guys... it's going in, but as far tossing <CENTER> and getting around to

Can I suggest that we will be seeing some general changes here rather soon,
as the XHTML patch is on the table (and will be committed, I'm sure.) Feel
free to contribute general improvements!  IMHO;

we are a reference server. Cool stuff is nice. Backwards compatibility
  with older browsers is required.

Style sheets handle this nicely. An original antique server or text browser
can display the body, but style sheets allow us to accentuate without breaking
any clients at all. Further, the text is 'legible' even with a screen-reader.

XHTML doesn't break anything (done properly). It is goodness.

Client side script is verboten :-)

No, Andrew you are not alone in thinking that in general the open-source
community has design-phobia. Whenever I send links to programming or
technical pages to my design-centric co-workers they invariably comment
on how dull those sites look.

I personally like and enjoy the new logo. Being as practically everyone's
getting quicker connections and computers these days, the animation
shouldn't make that much of a difference. It may also do some good in
drawing people who consider open source to be difficult and inaccessible.
Isn't it time to have -- and share -- a little fun?

no, not gaudy at all!

the 'powered by..' has always been a great idea...
the
pride involved in using apache! :)

try left justifying everything. <CENTER> is so mid-
90's... also, include a simple stylesheet that will
force a particular font and 'feel' for the pages... i
know, in *all* your spare time! :)

am i alone in thinking that in general the open-source
community has design-phobia?? and
i'm not refering to your page. when a user sees
that 'congratulations' page, it's more about the task
at hand than the design of the page... i'm not saying
that the apache look is bad or even gaudy. it's just
funny to see so many open source websites that are
functional versus eye-catching. the truth is that we
geeks are the only ones who see the pages, not the
general public... (or ms office 2000 users! he
he...:)

for example:
www.sendmail.org is kinda boring, but very functional
www.phpbuilder.com is very nice
www.justlinux.com is pretty nice
www.sgvlug.org is kinda boring

i guess we open-source-o-philes prefer functionality
over design 'froo froo.'

your page looks fine! ...for what it's worth!
