-In this document, we describe the support for data ingestion in AsterixDB, an open-source Big Data Management System (BDMS) that provides a platform for storage and analysis of large volumes of semi-structured data. Data feeds are a new mechanism for having continuous data arrive into a BDMS from external sources and incrementally populate a persisted dataset and associated indexes. We add a new BDMS architectural component, called a data feed, that makes a Big Data system the caretaker for functionality that

 So far, we have discussed the mechanism for retrieving data from the external world into the AsterixDB system. However, the arriving data may require certain pre-processing prior to being persisted in AsterixDB storage. Next, we discuss how the arriving data can be pre-processed.

Patch Set 2: Code-Review+1

(2 comments)

Hi,

I just added two comments related to the name of the process tweet function and "discarding" "unwanted" results...

(The last one is not necessary for this to pass the review:-))

Thanks,
-heri

https://asterix-gerrit.ics.uci.edu/#/c/359/2/asterix-doc/src/site/markdown/feeds/tutorial.md
File asterix-doc/src/site/markdown/feeds/tutorial.md:

Line 184:         apply function testlib#processRawTweet;
I believe this is called "testlib#addHashTags" now. I have suggested changing it back to its original name (that is the same as used in this document), which makes more sense to me...

Line 377:
Minor: Maybe we could add a note stating that that sometime it might be useful to allow a function to return "null" or a user just do not want ingest a feed with certain result values. With the last version of the feeds (with my changes), this is supported...

Patch Set 1:

The statement "connect feed ProcessedTwitterFeed to
    dataset ProcessedTweets ;" had the following error: "unable to create adapter java.lang.ClassNotFoundException: push_twitter [AlgebricksException]".

@Ian: please look into it.

I didn't check those instructions under "Writing an External UDF". I found some of the attribute names inconsistent with the attributes in the type definition.

Per our discussion, it will be better to move these instructions to a separate page.

If the library feature is not well tested and documented, I don't think we can include it in the pre-VLDB release.

Patch Set 3:

I think the function itself doesn't work either. The tutorial is still mixed up, but I followed a path I knew should work (create the secondary feed from the primary, applying #addHashTags), but it just barfs in the NC with this:
org.apache.asterix.common.exceptions.AsterixException: org.apache.hyracks.api.exceptions.HyracksDataException: org.apache.hyracks.api.exceptions.HyracksDataException: java.io.UTFDataFormatException: malformed input around byte 8
