checksum error

I get a checksum error when I run the command:
gzip -d -c jakarta-tomcat-4.0.3.tar.gz | tar -xf -
or the combination of commands:
gzip -d jakarta-tomcat-4.0.3.tar.gz
tar -xf jakarta-tomcat-4.0.3.tar
