problems running ant

I am having problems running ant.  The message below is what I am
getting.

Exception in thread "main" java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError:
org/apache/tools/ant/Main

Ant runs if I unjar the ant.jar to some directory and include the
directory path in my CLASSPATH.  Please give me some hints.

Does it run when you point you CLASSPATH to ant.jar directly?

How do you invoke Ant? Are you using the ant or ant.bat batch file
(you didn't mention your OS) that ships with Ant? If so, did you set
the ANT_HOME environment variable? Does ant.jar reside in ANT_HOME/lib
where the installation process should have put it?
