Using Servlet With Existing Web Server

Hello,

I am currently running the IPlanet server. I currently have the need to use a Servlet that could call a xml-rpc server (at a different box), which in turn would run a servlet that could deliver me back a list of files at a certain directory.

I have the Java & XML book, but all examples show using the small Helma webserver. And none of the examples show using a servlet.

I am confused because I do not know if my servlet (where the site currently runs) is the client or the server? And can this even be done not using the built in webserver? or should I use the build in web server.

As you can tell, I am slightly confused, so if anyone could assist me in getting started, I would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you,
