Tomcat & Apache together
Please forgive me if this is a simple problem but I'm new to Apache and
Tomcat so bear with me.
The basics of my problem are this: I'm trying to get Tomcat to run with
Apache and I can't seem
to get it working. I have Tomcat and Apache running separately at the
same time but I
expected to be able to include the module in Apache so that all I had to
run was Apache in order
to use Servlets and JSP. Hopefully this is a correct expectation. so
here is what I have done:
I'm running Redhat 6.0 on a Dell Inspiron 7500 Laptop with a Celeron 466
and 128Mb
I downloaded apache_1.3.9-i686-whatever-linux2.tar.gz and unzipped into
/usr/local/apache_1.3.9
I downloaded .../builds/tomcat/release/v3.0/linux/i386/mod_jserv.so
I first build Apache by itself just to make sure it works and it did.
I then tried to add the mod_jserv.so file to the apache mix and
reconfigure it and I got stuck. I never
could figure out what options to configure and what directory to put the
mod_jserv.so file in to make
apache aware of this module.
In the absense of direction here I thought I'd try the source
distribution of Tomcat instead so I:
I downloaded the Tomcat 3.0 source and put it in
/usr/local/jakarta/jakarta-tomcat
I downloaded the tools and put it in /usr/local/jakarta/jakarta-tools
I went through the Tomcat build process and got it working including
opening up the
the http://my.host.com:8080/ URL which confirmed that Tomcat was running
properly.
So based on the above, my system is capable of running both and I'm just
not doing something
right in the Apache configuration OR my assumption is wrong about only
having to run Apache
with the mod_jserv.so module included.
Can someone please help a newbie out?
Thanks,
GW

Thanks for the reply Brian, I'm still stuck; comments below.

I get the following error after adding the LoadModule command to the httpd.conf
file and trying to start Apache:
Syntax error on line 860 of /usr/local/apache/conf/httpd.conf:
Invalid command 'LoadModule', perhaps mis-spelled or defined by a module not
included in the server configurationbin/apachectl start: httpd could not be
started
This seems to indicate that I have Apache configured improperly to support the
Dynamic Loading of
modules. Is this really the problem and if so can someone tell me how to
reconfigure Apache to support them?
Thanks,
GW

GW,
I'm not an Apache guru, but I've done some mucking about in httpd.conf
There seems to be some leeway where Apache finds the module, so you have
some options here (as I said, I'm not a guru; I just know what works in my
current server.)
1-- When you give the LoadModule directive to Apache in httpd.conf, you can
specify a fully qualified path to the mod_jserv.so. I have this
LoadModule mod_servletexec.so /usr/lib/apache/mod_servletexec.so
(I'm playing with a couple servlet environments...)
2-- If you don't use an absolute path, Apache uses the directory you
installed to as the base. (for me, it's /usr/local/apache for 1.3.9
install.) I just put mod_jserv.so in /usr/local/apache/libexec/, and my
httpd.conf says:
LoadModule jserv_module libexec/mod_jserv.so
Now all I need to do is get Tomcat to stay running (Something in my
configuration isn't right...)
Hope that helps,
Brian Homrich

mod_jserv is glue that joins apache and tomcat.
Its not clear to me either why they shouldn't just be run independently on different ports.

If this is the case, then I don't understand what trying to build the mod_jserv.so module into Apache buys you. I have both Apache and Tomcat
running successfully but I don't understand the purpose of the binary download of the mod_jserv.so file if you have to run both anyway.
Thanks for the help Brad.

Your assumption (and mine) is incorrect. You must launch apache (apachectl start) and tomcat (tomcat/startup.sh) independently e.g. manually.
