Dynamic XML

Is there any detailed documentation on producers and processors 
that anyone knows of, or a step by step guide to using producers.

The problem I have is that when I run the producer given with 
cocoon using the URI

http://my_site.com/my_file.xml?producer.dummy=org.apache etc

If the file isn't there it returns an error stating that it can't find the file 
(expected??)

If the file is there it returns an error saying that the root element is 
required.?????????

So do I need to have a file there or not and if I do does it need to 
have any thing in it.
