[DISCUSS] Social media presence for Magpie — which platforms, and how to share access?

Hi all,

Now that we have a proper brand book with logos and ready-made
avatars/banners
(https://magpie.apache.org/brand), I'd like to open a discussion about
whether
we should set up social media profiles for Magpie, and if so, where.

The candidates I'd consider:

- LinkedIn - in my experience this is the most efficient one on the
"business/professional" side: it reaches decision-makers, adopting orgs, and
the wider software industry, and it's where a lot of project announcements
actually land these days.

- Fosstodon (Mastodon) - a great fit for the open-source community; it's
where
a lot of the FOSS crowd already is, and it aligns well with our values.

- Bluesky - increasingly good for reaching the open-source / tech community
too,
though a bit smaller than the others for now.

- X - more controversial these days, and I know opinions differ, but it
still
has reach and it might be worth having a presence there just so the name is
claimed, and we don't cede it. Genuinely unsure on this one - curious what
people think.

Two practical things we'd need to sort out regardless of which we pick:

1. Shared credentials. For accounts that are "owned" by the project
(Fosstodon,
Bluesky, X), we need a way to share the login/password/MFA within the PMC so
access isn't tied to a single person. We should figure out a sane way to
store and share those (e.g. a shared secret in a place only the PMC can
reach), so the accounts survive people coming and going.
We use shared 1password in Airflow - but I know others have other
experiences.

2. Page managers. For platforms that support managing a page from your own
personal profile (LinkedIn in particular), it would help to have a few PMC
members who are willing to be admins, so we can post and manage the page
directly without sharing a password at all.

So, two questions for the list:

- Which of these (if any) do you think are worth setting up?
- Who would be willing to help manage them?

The brand book already has correctly-sized avatars and banners for all four
platforms, so once we decide, the artwork is ready to go:

What do you all think?

Thanks,
Jarek

Hi Jarek,

First of all, I took a look at the brand guide, and I think it looks cool 🙌

Personally, I like all of the platforms you listed.

I also asked a few people from other open source communities about their experiences. One piece of feedback I heard was that Bluesky tends to have better discoverability thanks to its algorithm. I also heard several recommendations for Fosstodon, since many open source projects already have a presence there and it's a great place to connect with the FOSS community.

Overall, the recommendation I received was to create accounts on all of the platforms you listed, and I tend to agree. 😉

Regarding shared credentials, I've also been using 1Password through their 1Password for Open Source:
https://github.com/1Password/for-open-source

It's worked well in my experience. The only limitation I'm aware of is that the program is limited to 10 users, so that may or may not be sufficient depending on how many PMC members we want to grant access to.

Thanks again for kicking off this discussion!

Thanks,
Yeonguk

AIUI Infra use Bitwarden.
Another strategy is to store the credentials in a private repo,
possibly encrypted using the public keys of all those who need access.
M&P may wish to ensure they have access to the credentials as well.
