FYI [Fwd: First pass at mirrors document]
Since you have been talking about where to put distros, this is FYI
about a discussion taking place at infrastructure@apache.org that will
have impact on the topic.
Just FYI.

Okay, I took the results of prior discussions on infrastructure@ and
attempted to jot down what the perceived consensus was. You can view
the page at:
http://www.apache.org/dev/mirrors.html
If you see any disrepancies or mistakes, lemme know or just edit the
document yourself. (site/xdocs/dev/mirrors.xml)
The target audience of this document is the remaining projects that
do not allow their software to be mirrored. The fact is that most
mirrors only mirror apache-dist - so I think we have to work within
that constraint. The rsync script that Pier has posted before is a
bit overboard - we should only have *one* rsync module for our
mirrors to retrieve. (We do *not* want them to mirror the web pages!)
The ideal should be that all releases must be accessible only from
http://www.apache.org/dist/[project-name].
(Note that we have hacks in place so this sort of works, but that's
achieved by Alias and redirections - the files *really* have to live
in /www/www.apache.org/dist/* for the mirrors to pick them up.)
Outstanding issues:
1) xml.apache.org needs to store releases in
/www/www.apache.org/dist/xml/[subproject-name]
rather than
/www/xml.apache.org/[subproject-name]/dist
2) jakarta.apache.org needs to store releases in
/www/www.apache.org/dist/jakarta/[subproject-name]
rather than
/www/jakarta.apache.org/builds/[subproject-name]
3) Delete all nightly builds directories (most are empty now)
4) Implement a similar page to the HTTP Server download page for all
projects. See:
http://httpd.apache.org/download.cgi
(httpd-site/xdocs/download.xml contains our source. The rest of it
is just some minor tweaking to the site/docs/dyn/mirrors/mirrors.cgi
to recognize the locations of each template file.)
5) For those that haven't seen it (thanks to Stefano for showing me
this link!):
http://www.apache.org/~vgritsenko/stats/daily.html
We should strive to eliminate as much of the jakarta and XML
downloads from daedalus as possible - we need to use the mirrors for
these downloads.
