Use case for apache ranger and knox

Hi all!

I want to know how can we use apache knox and apache ranger effectively ?

is it useful for only webhdfs ? Can we restrict a user from using hdfs or
hadoop commands within cluster and outside of cluster?

What is the best use of ranger?

Thanks

Hafiz, you can find more information on Knox supported services here
https://knox.apache.org/books/knox-0-6-0/user-guide.html#Service+Details

@Alok, the Brussels Hadoop summit presentation is here
<http://www.slideshare.net/Hadoop_Summit/security-needs-in-hadoops-current-and-future-how-apache-ranger-can-help>,
not sure if adds any value to Hafiz's question.

Hafiz:

This is a decent introduction to Ranger<https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qZMhK6MHfXE> in particular and the echo system in which Ranger works. There are a few other<https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uCZKrKo5ebQ> decent introductory Ranger videos to help you get started, too. There is a similar introductory video on Knox<https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KLI9UUW00Kc> available. I think a review of these might answer most if not all of your questions.

Coming to think of it, @Bosco/@Balaji/@Selva would you find mind uploading a soft copy of your Brussels presentation on the internet (say slideshare) and then post a link to it on the above YouTube page, too, please? I felt that it would be helpful for someone viewing the video if they also had access to the presentation slides.

Thanks
