variable definition not clear

Hi....
I am new to Jmeter and hav a very limited idea of its aplication and scope..
I am not able to decipher the differences between elapsed time and latency.
can anyone help??

Latency = time from request start to time first byte is received
Elapsed = latency + time from 1st to last byte (or basically time from your
request start till last byte is recd)
